One of the most anticipated matchups of the first round at the Arctic Open was the clash between Denmark’s Anders Antonsen and Japan Open gold medalist Alex Lanier. The match delivered the expected level of quality and excitement, ultimately resulting in a French victory. Although it could be seen as a surprise, Lanier has proven in recent weeks that he is a serious contender at the highest level. Lanier considers the Danish star a role model, and this was the second time he has defeated him in his career. Incidentally, this means that the tournament’s top seed in both singles categories has already been eliminated early, as Wang Zhi Yi fell yesterday, followed by Antonsen today.
In men’s singles, another big name saw his journey end in the first round. Anthony Sinisuka Ginting has performed exceptionally well in recent weeks, but the first stop of the European tour didn’t go as planned. The Indonesian star was defeated by China’s Lu Guang Zhu. Ginting’s compatriot, Jonatan Christie, cleared his first match successfully, as did Li Shi Feng, Kodai Naraoka, Lee Zii Jia, and Kunlavut Vitidsarn, who defeated the China Open gold medalist.
In men’s doubles, perhaps the most attention was on the world champion Malaysian pair, returning after a long break due to Soh Woi Yik’s injury. The Aaron Chia / Soh Woi Yik duo faced a tough battle against the Chinese pair Chen Bo Yang / Liu Yi. The Malaysians played from behind in both sets but managed to focus better in the crucial moments, which was the key to their victory.
Speaking of men’s doubles, we must mention the victory of the Daddies. The veteran Indonesians displayed a textbook performance to defeat their Chinese rivals and secure their spot in the round of 16. Ashan and Setiawan will face the „Danish Daddies” next, as Astrup and Rasmussen won their domestic showdown against the Toft / Søndergaard duo. This match was also a rematch of this year’s European Championship final.
Tomorrow’s competition at the Super 500 tournament promises more thrilling matches, which can be watched live on the BWF YouTube channel.
